Tax Justice and Women’s Empowerment: An African Call for a More Equitable Future
By Dr. Jamila Mourabit – Chairwoman of the Multidisciplinary Women Researchers Council, Morocco
Accra, the capital of Ghana, is preparing to host a pivotal event from August 18 to 22, 2025: the African Feminist Macroeconomics Academy (AFMA). This gathering, under the theme “A Feminist Approach to Tax Justice – Recovering Public Resources for Gender Equality and Economic Justice,” places the issue of tax justice at the heart of the discussion on women’s empowerment and the continent’s development.
Tax systems in many African countries have long been a source of inequality, with marginalized groups, particularly women, bearing the brunt of government failures to provide essential services. Women are often responsible for family care, and they are forced to fill the gap in health, education, and childcare services when governments fall short. Illicit financial flows and tax evasion, which, according to the World Bank, cost Africa over $50 billion annually, not only impact national economies but also directly undermine women’s rights and livelihoods.

The AFMA academy is more than just a conference; it is a genuine platform for movement and change. It is a unique gathering that brings together feminist activists, academics, and community movement leaders to reshape tax systems to be more equitable and inclusive. Participants will address critical issues, such as legal challenges and the mechanisms needed to recover public resources, in addition to formulating fair tax strategies that serve sustainable development and gender equality.
This event reinforces the belief that achieving economic justice cannot be done in isolation from women’s empowerment. By building transparent and effective tax systems, the necessary funding can be secured for public services that benefit the entire community and reduce the disproportionate burdens on women. It is a call to everyone, from policymakers to citizens, to participate in building a future where tax justice is the foundation for a more equitable and equal society in Africa.
