The Role of Gender Equality in Sustainable Developme

At the recent UN Global Youth Conference (UN GYCS25) in India, Dr. Mohamed Alserihi, President of the Arab Council for Creativity and Innovation, delivered a compelling presentation on the crucial link between gender equality and achieving sustainable development. Dr. Alserihi emphasized that equality between men and women is not just a moral imperative, but the indispensable foundation for global progress and the realization of the UN’s 2030 Agenda.

Dr. Alserihi presented a clear vision of the relationship between gender equality and economic growth, asserting that achieving parity is a profitable economic investment. According to the figures he presented, closing gender gaps could add an estimated $28 trillion to the global GDP by 2025. Furthermore, businesses with diverse executive teams see a notable increase in profitability, reaching up to 25%. These figures underscore that integrating women into the workforce directly boosts the economy and strengthens communities.

Dr. Alserihi’s intervention did not focus solely on the economic aspect; he also addressed existing social challenges, such as violence against women and the disparity in unpaid household labor, in addition to constitutional restrictions that persist in some countries.

Conversely, he highlighted the social benefits of equality, noting that empowering women contributes to poverty reduction and improved family health, particularly by lowering child mortality rates. Communities that embrace equality are also more resilient and better able to recover from crises.

From an environmental standpoint, Alserihi drew attention to the role of women in sustainability efforts, confirming that their active participation in water management and climate solutions significantly increases the effectiveness of these efforts.

reviewed successful international examples, including Saudi Arabia’s efforts to empower women by allocating seats in the Shura Council and appointing them to leadership positions, the rise in women’s representation in the Tunisian parliament following parity laws, and Morocco’s effective programs supporting girls’ education. He also pointed to Chile’s implementation of gender quotas in environmental leadership positions, which led to a 40% increase in the effectiveness of conservation programs.

concluded his presentation by affirming that accelerating gender equality is the key to achieving all 17 Sustainable Development Goals, and that the future depends on unlocking the full potential of all individuals without discrimination.
